This from Peaches record label site….Yeah, it’s called Fatherfucker. Peaches knows full well that the title might scare a few people away…but she’s not in it for the shock value. “In the ‘Peaches’ way,” she explains, “I’m not one to shy away from controversial words, I just turn them around to my liking. It really was the best title; all the machismo versus libido versus femininity;it just seemed to fit and take it to a new level.”

A little bit pretentious there no? Anyway with the whole electroclash thing having fizzled out, does anyone give a shit about Peaches? The albums pretty much the same as the last one ‘cept nothing as griiiinding as “Fuck the pain away”. I loved the way in that song you just hear a “YEAH!” off in the distance and then the electronic drums start slish-slish-slashing. She still a good producer and she still has a knack for creating a drumbeat that sounds like a cane being smacked across someone’s bare arse. The Iggy Pop punk rock collab, “Kick it” is kinda cute too.
Iggy Pop: “I heard you like kinky shit!”
Peaches: “It just depends who I’m with”
Iggy Pop: “What is it S&M or some kinda toy?”
Peaches: “Like you said search and destroy!”

Along with the single, “Tombstone” which shows a lighter, streamlined, more nimble touch to Peaches usual style. The production is definitely better and on “Shake ya dix” is her most obvious attempt at “rap” and it’s just as good as anything from Eve or Lil’ Kim. Her shtick is getting played out though and with an intro thats just her shouting “I DON’T GIVE A FUCK!” ad nauseum over a sample of Joan Jett’s “Bad repuatation” you could say she’s spreading herself thin (well, she’s always spreading herself anyway har har).
Overall not that bad esp. if you really liked the first one, just dont expect anything different or any new ground being covered here. Personally I’m a bit bored of the whole Peaches thang but I’m fickle like that anyway.

Could you imagine anyone wanting to fuck Peaches? She’s a munter, well it doesn’t help when you look like an Amish uncle on the cover either…

Even “good commercials” that your friends’ reccomend are rarely actually GOOD. They’re simply good as far as commercials go, which really when compared to good movies or good music, is not really that good.

So who is the white boy that can’t really sing, notorious for his drug habit and homophobia who happens to be a bit of a lyrical genius that’s just released a solo record. That’s right kids, one Shaun William Ryder. In truth the Eminem comparison is extremely tenuous, Shaun was always more likely to ruin record labels than set them up, it did provide me with a handy little intro though.

Amateur night at the big top is his first solo album and has only sneaked out after some legal gymnastics, seeing everyone he has ever met seems to be suing him. The name stems Ryder’s pathological fear of being beaten to death by clowns, a phobia that bizarrely echoes that of the Kramer character in Seinfeld.

The, eh, ‘concept’ behind this is that Ryder just tells stories completely off the cuff over music recorded by his cousin, (in legal terms Ryder is just doing guest vocals on this album.) This sort of strategy can only be attempted by the most outrageously talented to have any hope of scoring results higher than dire. Luckily Ryder loses more talent on his sneezes than most of the glamour pusses that are foisted on us ever have.

The album that comes out the other end is like a late sixties psychedelic album for the washed up, burnt out e-generation. Listening to it is like being trapped in a night terror or fever dream that you can’t break out of. Lines repeat, images appear and disappear, there’s a constant confusion along with a desperation to break out through it.

I read that Ryder is referring to this as his ‘Yoko Ono phase.’ He’s not kidding.

“Yoko Ono made this all this weird music..then twenty years on everyone realizes it’s great pop music.”

Plenty of us are still stubbornly clinging to the idea that it was shite, Shaun, but there’s always a couple of negative Normans around. Ryder rambles in a strangely pointed way, the story about getting the army into E is hilarious -

In Amateur night at the big top Ryder documents the final horrible comedown to reality at the e’d up false paradises of the nineties. A reality we’ve been removed from so long it now seems like nightmarish and terrifying. It’s a dirty job but someone had to do it. Shaun Ryder - misunderstood prophet, how are you?
